Select this option to see how the nonprofit data variable you selected in Step One compares to for-profits and/or government in the same field(s), geographic region(s), and year(s).
TIP: If you wish to display these data in a chart, please limit your selection of multiple data points in Steps Three, Four, and Five to one multi-selection, and two single selections (e.g., 5 counties, one field of activity/industry, one year). If you make multiple selections in more than one of the following steps, your visualization choice in Step Six will be limited to a table.
Select this option to see what share of employment, establishments, or annual wages nonprofit account for, rather than the absolute numbers.
TIP: This option is not available if you selected the average weekly wage data variable in Step One.
Select this option to generate a table showing the nonprofit variable you selected in Step One next to population and/or income data in the same geographic region(s) and year(s).
TIP: These data can only be displayed in table format.
This variable is a sum of several categories of public assistance program payments—including low income maintenance, disability, Medicaid, and unemployment assistance—divided by the total personal income in the geographical area.

Please select a state. If you have selected State vs. County or County vs. County please also select at least one county.
If you select this option, a data point for the U.S. national total will be added to your visualization.
TIP: National data are only available for the years 2007-2010; if you choose to include national data, your selection will be limited to these years in Step Five. To learn more about this limitation, please see the Methodology page.
State: Choose up to 5 states to be compared to one another, then move to Step Four.
County: Choose the state in which the county(ies) you would like to compare are located, then select up to 5 counties in that state in the next box.

Choosing this option will allow you to show nonprofit data across all industries/fields of activity. When you choose this option, you will have two choices in the visualization stage:
TIP: To see how the nonprofit data variable you chose in Step One breaks down by industry in a pie chart, make sure that you have only selected a single geographic area (state or county). Select this option, and move on to Step Five, being sure to select only a single year. Note that this option is not available for the average weekly wage variable.
If you would like to compare total employment, establishments, total annual wage, or average weekly wage across states, counties, or years, select this option and move to Step Five.
Please select the fields of activity/industry that you would like to see.
Choose up to 5 industries to compare to each other.
You will be able to choose only those industries where nonprofit employment, wage, or establishment data are available for the geographic area(s) you selected in the previous step. Data for greyed out industries in the selection box are not available because either a) fewer than three nonprofits are operating in that field in the chosen geographical area(s) or b) a single nonprofit unit represents more than 80% of the total in the area. The Bureau of Labor Statistics legally mandates this data suppression because disclosure may allow identification of individual units reporting the data. For more on this, please see the Methodology page.
The fields of activity listed here are based on the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes, which break activity into both 2-digit “parent” industries, and more specific 3-digit “sub-industries.” Use this toggle to change the sorting between alphabetical and hierarchical, with the 3-digit industries listed below their 2-digit parent. For more on NAICS please see Census.gov.
Sorting: Change sorting
Please select the year(s) that you would like to see.
You will be able to choose only those years for which nonprofit employment, wage, or establishment data are available for the geographic area(s) and field(s) of activity/industry(ies) you selected in the previous steps. Data for greyed out years in the selection box are not available because of variations in Bureau of Labor Statistics and state Labor Department data collection and release policies. For more on this, please see the Methodology page.
Single year TIP: If you selected more than one geographic area in Step Three and more than one field of activity/industry in Step Four, you must choose a single year of data to display.
Up to 5 years If you have selected only one geographic area in Step 2 and/or only one field or activity/industry in Step 4, you can choose up to 5 years of data to display.
Select one of the options below to choose how you would like to see your data visualized. Greyed out options are unavailable based on the parameters you have chosen in the previous steps. Once you have chose your chart or table, proceed to the final step to choose axis and color options for your visualization (if applicable) and review your selections.
TIP: Once you have created your chart or table, you will be able to toggle through the other available visualization options before saving!
Please select one of the visualization options below to display your data.
Please review your final choices.
Please customize your chart.
Based on your selections, you can choose what to display on the axes and your data points from the drop-down menus.
You can choose the colors of your visualization using the selector or by entering a hex color code of your choosing.
