Pushing back on taxation of nonprofits: Some lessons from the field

By on June 20, 2012

The Listening Post Project has released a new report covering the discussion from a recent Listening Post webinar on nonprofit taxation and government fees, which was convened to dig deeper into some of the findings from the Project’s 2010 survey. Participants identified four strategies that are useful in fending off proposed fees:

  1. Mobilize your organization’s strengths.
  2. Emphasize your organization’s economic impact.
  3. Collaborate with state nonprofit associations, regional or national field coalitions, and/or the National Council of Nonprofits.
  4. Pursue legal means to resist potential taxes and fees.

Read more about these strategies in the full report. You can also share your experience with PILOTs/other fees and offer advice to organizations facing similar pressures from state or local governments. Submit your stories to listeningpostproject@jhu.edu or on the CCSS Facebook page, and they’ll be compiled and posted here later.
