This dashboard was created by the Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies to accompany the 2020 Nonprofit Employment Report, released on May 16, 2020.
Hover over any state or territory in the map to see data on the nonprofit share of 2017 overall private employment and nonprofit employment as a share of manufacturing employment in that state or territory. Click on a state to see how nonprofit employment changed between 2007 and 2017; the share that nonprofits represent of private employment in the key fields of nonprofit activity, and how nonprofit wages compare to for-profit wages in the major fields of nonprofit activity. National averages are shown for comparison below the map.
These data are drawn from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW). The BLS released data for 2013-2017 via their research program on nonprofits in late 2019. Not all data are available for all states due to federally mandated disclosure rules that require suppression of statistical information that allows the identification of single institutional units. For more information about the methodology used by BLS to extract nonprofit data from the QCEW and the limitations on available data imposed by the federal disclosure rules, please see Appendix B in the 2020 Nonprofit Employment Report.
