Our annual Labor Day erlease focuses on nonprofit job losses 6 months into the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. We found that, despite a partial recovery of the U.S. economy over the Summer, the U.S. Bureau Labor Statistics' August Employment Situation Report suggests that nonprofit employment was still down by an estimated nearly 1 million jobs compared to where it stood in February 2020. The Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies’ 2020 Nonprofit Employment Report examines new data on employment and wages in private, nonprofit establishments in the United States. This report draws on the rich body of data generated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages from 2007 through 2017 (the most recent year for which data are available), examines available data on COVID-19 job losses to estimate the impact on nonprofits through the first three months of the U.S. pandemic response, and highlights new BLS data on the number of employees in nonprofit firms to understand eligibility for COVID-related federal support funding.

Based on new Bureau of Labor Statistics data on nonprofit employment and wages in 2017, this Labor Day news release highlights the first-ever available data on Metro Statistical Areas. This news release was updated on September 6, 2019 to include Figure 4 showing nonprofit employment vs. private employment in other industries and to clarify that Figure 3 reflects nonprofit employment vs. total employment, including public/government workers.

Based on new Bureau of Labor Statistics data on nonprofit employment and wages in 2016, this Labor Day news release shows that, between the pre-recession year of 2007 and 2016, nonprofit employment grew by nearly 17% while for-profit employment grew by less than 5%—a 3-1 nonprofit advantage.
